Running Video for Coaches: Consistent Side and Rear Views

How do you record running from the side and rear?

Keep the whole runner visible from the side and rear, and write down the task and surface. Those two views can help a coaching conversation without turning the video into a medical gait assessment.

Put it into practice

  1. Choose a coach-approved short running task and fixed viewpoints outside the athlete's route.
  2. Frame the complete athlete rather than a close crop that removes arm or foot context.
  3. Record the surface, footwear and task description with the session for later interpretation.

Choose evidence the recording can actually show

Review the full pass at ordinary speed before selecting stills. If a runner moves diagonally toward the phone, explain the perspective change. Clinical gait questions belong to qualified professionals using an appropriate assessment process, not to an inferred app score.

Using Running Video to Discuss a Coach-Selected Cue For the next related coaching task, compare its camera purpose and recording limits before reusing this arrangement.

Questions coaches ask

Does a rear running view diagnose asymmetry?

Not independently. Route direction, perspective and task can affect the appearance. Qualified professionals interpret clinical questions through an appropriate assessment process.

Why keep footwear and surface notes?

They describe the conditions of the recorded task. Those differences matter when a coach decides whether two examples belong in the same discussion.

A mistake to avoid

A camera tilted relative to the route can create apparent asymmetry that belongs to the image rather than the runner.

Before the full take

Ask the venue where you can film, then choose the short stretch your lesson needs to show. Leave lanes, runways and landing areas clear, and check a saved sample before the next attempt.

Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
