Comparing Running Drill Videos Across the Season
How do you compare running drill videos across a season?
Repeat a familiar drill and keep the recording notes through the season. Your coach can then compare examples with the conditions in mind instead of guessing why two clips look different.
Put it into practice
- Select a coach-approved drill that can be recorded in a comparable observation zone.
- Record the surface, direction, footwear and camera arrangement for each review session.
- Keep ordinary attempts and note changes in conditions before selecting examples for discussion.
Choose evidence the recording can actually show
When the training task changes, create a separate series rather than forcing a direct comparison. A useful seasonal summary distinguishes the athlete's stated task, the coach's observation and any independently measured result.
Trackside Phone Recording: Light, Weather and Equipment Checks For the next related coaching task, compare its camera purpose and recording limits before reusing this arrangement.
Questions coaches ask
Should different-speed runs be compared as identical?
No. Label the actual tasks and let the coach decide what comparison is meaningful. Similar camera framing does not make unlike activities equivalent trials.
What should a seasonal summary claim?
Describe the practices and observations actually documented. Attribute independent results to their real source and avoid numerical improvement claims derived from appearance alone.
A mistake to avoid
Two recordings made at different speeds or perspectives should not be presented as equivalent trials.

Capture each dated session in Squad Fuses and keep the exports with the task notes. Start a new series when the drill changes substantially.
Record synchronized angles from multiple supported devices. Free includes a two-camera Nearby session. Higher camera counts and Anywhere hosting depend on your plan.
Before the full take
Ask the venue where you can film, then choose the short stretch your lesson needs to show. Leave lanes, runways and landing areas clear, and check a saved sample before the next attempt.
Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
