Swim Turns: Recording the Approach, Wall and Departure
How do you show the approach and departure in a swim turn?
Keep enough of the approach, wall and departure in view to explain the turn. Let pool staff choose where equipment can stand, then check how much the saved clip actually shows.
Put it into practice
- Choose a dry protected position with the pool staff that preserves access and supervision.
- Test whether the wall and relevant approach section remain visible despite glare and lane equipment.
- Label each attempt and state which portions disappear below the water or outside the frame.
Choose evidence the recording can actually show
If a turn is obscured by reflections, identify the gap instead of guessing its sequence. An alternative staff-approved angle may improve the next sample, but no ordinary phone recording should be presented as an official timing result without validation.
Diving Practice Video: Approved Fixed Views of the Attempt For the next related coaching task, compare its camera purpose and recording limits before reusing this arrangement.
Questions coaches ask
Can a poolside clip supply official turn timing?
Only an appropriately validated separate method can establish the required timing result. Ordinary surface footage should not be presented as a complete underwater or official race analysis.
What if glare obscures the wall action?
Document the missing evidence and test another staff-approved future viewpoint if appropriate. Do not reconstruct a turn phase from reflections or an unreadable surface image.
A mistake to avoid
A surface-only view should not be described as a complete underwater turn analysis.
From idea to recording
Try it with VidFuego
Record matching poolside views in Squad Fuses where the setup works reliably. Keep any separately measured turn time distinct from the visual lesson.
Record synchronized angles from multiple supported devices. Free includes a two-camera Nearby session. Higher camera counts and Anywhere hosting depend on your plan.
Before the full take
Agree on filming positions with the venue and coach before practice. Keep phones dry and outside approaches, landing areas and staff routes; let supervision come first.
Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
