Gymnastics Vault Recording: Approach and Apparatus Context

How do you record a gymnastics vault from clear fixed positions?

Ask the coach which part of the vault needs to be seen, then keep equipment outside the runway, apparatus and landing routes. Test the frame before relying on it for a lesson.

Put it into practice

  1. Ask the supervising coach to approve all equipment positions outside the practice and landing routes.
  2. Frame the intended approach and apparatus sequence using a controlled rehearsal selected by the coach.
  3. Inspect a short recording for missed phases before adding another protected view.

Choose evidence the recording can actually show

If one camera cannot retain the whole sequence, give its partial coverage a clear label. The second angle should fill a specific visible gap; it cannot justify drawing conclusions about movement that both cameras miss.

Questions coaches ask

What is the first decision for vault recording?

The supervising coach approves the practice task and equipment boundary. Camera positions must leave the runway, apparatus, landing and spotter routes fully accessible.

What if each view captures only part of the vault?

Label partial coverage honestly and check whether the relevant phase exists in either view. Matching cameras cannot justify conclusions about action that both miss.

A mistake to avoid

A tripod beyond the frame edge may still obstruct a coach or athlete approaching the apparatus.

Before the full take

Agree on filming positions with the venue and coach before practice. Keep phones dry and outside approaches, landing areas and staff routes; let supervision come first.

Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
