Organizing Pitching Video by Pitch Type and Drill
How do you label pitching clips so feedback stays accurate?
Agree on how you'll label pitches before the set starts. A simple, reliable attempt log helps you find the right throw later and keeps feedback attached to what the pitcher was trying to do.
Put it into practice
- Agree on a simple verbal or written attempt label before the pitcher begins the set.
- Retain the pitch type, intended target and drill conditions in the coach's approved notes.
- Check the final clip against those notes before discussing an apparent difference between attempts.
Choose evidence the recording can actually show
If the label is uncertain, mark the attempt as unconfirmed instead of assigning a pitch type from appearance. Use a fresh clearly identified set for the question that matters. Video organization is more dependable than inference from a small blurred ball image.

Questions coaches ask
What if a pitch label is missing?
Mark the attempt as uncertain. Ask for a properly identified future set where appropriate instead of assigning a pitch type from the shape of a blurred delivery.
Is a voice label enough for the log?
Use whichever method the coach can verify reliably. Check the saved record against the attempt sequence before attaching feedback or sending a clip to an athlete.
A mistake to avoid
Assuming every visually similar pitch had the same intention removes important context from the review.

Before the full take
Choose protected phone positions with the coach before practice starts. Keep them out of throwing and batting paths, film a short test and label each player's attempts as you go.
Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
