Lighting Gyms and Dance Studios for Video

How should you test gym or dance-studio lighting for video?

Illuminate the full movement area consistently and test the existing fixtures for flicker. A setup that looks good at the starting mark may fail as the performer travels.

Put it into practice

  1. Walk the complete route and inspect changes in face and body brightness. Account for windows, mirrors, and existing overhead lights.
  2. Position suitable fixtures outside the activity area and secure them appropriately. Use broad coverage instead of a narrow pool of light for traveling choreography.
  3. Record fast movement under the intended settings. Check flicker and reflections from every camera position before the class or routine begins.

Inspect every position used by the routine

Have the performer walk the entire rehearsal area and pause where the face or hands matter most. Look for brightness changes and flicker in the recording, not only while standing at the opening mark. A broad routine needs coverage across the floor.

Record a short section containing travel and turns, then inspect the final layout. Adjust lighting or movement marks when one angle repeatedly loses useful detail rather than relying on later brightening.

  • Test the full floor area
  • Inspect existing fixtures
  • Repeat after moving a light

Questions creators ask

What should the lighting rehearsal cover?

Cover the full movement area and actual fixtures rather than only a starting pose. Review the saved passage for readable detail and distracting brightness changes throughout the sequence.

What should every participating camera check?

Each should show its assigned action under those conditions. A good result from the front view does not establish that a side or detail camera has equally useful coverage.

A mistake to avoid

A bright floor does not guarantee a readable face; overhead light can still cast deep eye shadows.

Before the full take

Rehearse the complete movement path before recording. Keep stands and cables outside that path, and verify that hands, feet, and equipment remain visible at the extremes.

Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
