Keeping a Consistent Tennis Serve Video History

How do you keep a useful season of tennis serve recordings?

Keep the court side, serve task and phone positions with each lesson clip. That gives you a fairer starting point for discussing changes across the season.

Put it into practice

  1. Choose a repeatable coach-approved serve task and preserve its setup notes.
  2. Record court side, source conditions and the athlete's assigned cue for each session.
  3. Compare like tasks and flag perspective differences before interpreting selected frames.

Choose evidence the recording can actually show

Keep all selected examples traceable to the original set. If a clip illustrates a cue rather than typical performance, label it as an example. The history should help the athlete remember the lesson, not manufacture a numerical progress claim.

Questions coaches ask

What should be kept with dated serve clips?

Court side, task, cue, camera references and relevant conditions. Those notes prevent a changed viewpoint from being presented as measured movement development.

Should the best serve represent the whole session?

Label it as a selected example if that is its purpose. Keep ordinary attempts traceable and avoid implying a favorable clip describes typical session performance.

A mistake to avoid

Different camera height can create the appearance of a changed alignment without a matching movement change.

Before the full take

Keep phones outside the court's playing and run-off areas. Start with one view of the whole drill and another that adds a useful detail, then check the video on a phone.

Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
