Street Interviews: Capturing Interviewer and Subject Angles Simultaneously

How do you plan a two-angle street interview?

Use two street-interview angles to show the conversation and the subject's answer clearly. Discuss recording and intended publication first, and choose a location where speech is intelligible.

Put it into practice

  1. Check the applicable recording rules and the location's access policy. Explain the topic and distribution to the interviewee, including whether their face and name will appear.
  2. Place both cameras on a consistent side of the conversation and keep sidewalks clear. Choose a main voice source and test traffic and wind before starting.
  3. Capture complete answers and follow-up questions. Review the cut against the original conversation so reactions and pauses retain their meaning.

Choose the sound location before the background

Ask the participant about the intended recording and publication, then test speech in the chosen spot. A visually interesting street corner may make answers difficult to hear. Position complementary views around a location that supports clear conversation.

Record a short question and answer before the full exchange. Review framing, interruptions and the participant's comfort; changing the background is easier before recording than repairing an unusable interview afterward.

  • Discuss intended publication
  • Test a complete exchange
  • Keep pedestrian routes clear

Questions creators ask

Where should the interviewer and subject stand?

Choose a position where speech remains clear and both views explain the conversation. Rehearse framing without placing either person in a busy movement path.

What should you explain before recording begins?

Explain the subject, intended use and publication plan, then check applicable recording requirements. Keep permission decisions separate from the act of joining a camera session.

A mistake to avoid

Being outside does not by itself resolve every audio-consent, location, or publication issue.

Before the full take

Identify the story, access permissions, and essential coverage before arriving. Rehearse sound and equipment with the actual operators, preserve original media, and verify context before publishing an edit.

Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
