Multi-Camera Workflows

The 180-Degree Rule for Multi-Camera Creators

How should the line of action guide camera placement?

Keep camera positions on one side of the line of action when consistent screen direction matters. This helps viewers understand where people or moving objects are relative to each other.

Put it into practice

  1. Draw an imaginary line between interview speakers or along a movement path. Choose the side from which your main coverage will look.
  2. Place your close and wide cameras on that side. Check the resulting gaze directions instead of relying only on a floor plan.
  3. If you intentionally cross the line, include a clear wider view or a visible camera move to reestablish geography. Make the change understandable.

Map direction before moving a camera

Draw a line between two interview seats and place the cameras on one side for the initial setup. Review both close views: one speaker should appear to look toward the other rather than both looking in the same screen direction. For moving demonstrations, map the action's direction instead.

A deliberate crossing can work when a clear wide view reestablishes positions. Use that transition intentionally and review the sequence at normal speed; a diagram alone does not prove the finished edit is understandable.

  • Mark the line of action
  • Compare screen direction
  • Reestablish position after a crossing

Questions creators ask

What should you inspect beyond a floor plan?

Review the recorded gaze and movement directions. Camera positions that look organized on paper can still create a confusing relationship when the subjects turn or refer to an object.

When can a change of side remain understandable?

Include clear context that lets viewers follow the new relationship. Judge the actual sequence rather than treating a rule label as a substitute for showing where the action is happening.

A mistake to avoid

A technically sharp shot can still confuse the viewer if it reverses a person's movement or apparent gaze without context.

Before the full take

Assign a wide safety angle and a closer storytelling angle. Check connection, framing, sound, battery, and available storage together; a successful rehearsal is more useful than a settings checklist alone.

Record a short test, review the picture and sound, then adjust the setup. A rehearsal on your actual devices is the quickest way to check whether the workflow fits the scene.
